The effects of family environment, mental health of preschoolers and their mothers and parenting on preschooler¡¯s behavior problem in divorced families

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of family environment, mental health of preschoolers and their mothers and parenting on preschooler¡¯s behavior problem in 147 divorced families. Preschooler¡¯s age range was from 2 years old to 5 years old. Results are as follows. First, mothers in middle class showed more controlling parenting and promoted more for children¡¯s dependency on their mothers. Preschoolers in middle class showed more external behavior problems than those in poverty. Second, social support, economic support from ex-husband, child custody, preschooler¡¯s difficult temperament, mother¡¯s alcohol abuse, dysfunctional parenting were the significant predictor of both preschooler¡¯s internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. Theoretical and therapeutical implications for preschoolers and their mothers in divorced family of results are discussed.
